Bumper yield of wheat expected in C’nawabganj

Officials of agriculture department and farmers in Chapainawabganj are expecting a bumper production of wheat this season as weather condition had been favourable in the region.

The harvesting of wheat is likely to start in the last week of this month in most areas.

Muhammad Nazrul Islam, deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chapainawabganj, said around 30,100 hectares of land was brought under wheat cultivation in the district where most popular wheat varieties cultivated are BARI-30 through BARI-33 -- all developed by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI).

Wheat has been cultivated in an expanded area in the district this year and it is likely that targeted production will be exceed this time, with 12 to 16 maunds of wheat expected from each bigha of land, said officials and farmers.

During visits to different areas in Sadar upazila on Saturday and Sunday, most farmers this correspondent spoke with said that the harvesting of wheat would start in the last week this month and they were hopeful of a bumper production this season.

Farmer Ohidul Islam, from Mahadanga area under Chapainawabganj municipality, said, "I decided to cultivate wheat considering its growing demand and high price in the market."

Another farmer, Motaleb Hossain, from Hossain Dying village in Sadar upazila, said, "I cultivated wheat on my two bighas of land this season and I am expecting to get 14 maunds of produce from each bigha."
