Body of deceased baby removed from grave, left on roadside in B’baria

In a shocking incident, some locals in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila have allegedly removed the dead body of a baby from grave, and left the body on the roadside.

The incident happened on Thursday in Ghatura village under Suhilpur union in the upazila.

Family of the baby alleged that some locals did this since they belong to the Ahmadiyya community.

Those who did this are against Ahmadiyya beliefs, the baby's father Saiful Islam alleged, adding that he, however, does not know who were behind the incident.

The baby girl was born prematurely on Tuesday afternoon and kept in an incubator at a Christian memorial hospital in Brahmanbaria town.

The baby died on Thursday morning around 5:30am, Saiful said.

She was buried at the Ghatura village graveyard around 7:00am on the same day, he said.

Some anti-Ahmadiyya people from the village later made announcements in the area to gather similar minded people at the graveyard and they dug up the body of the baby from the grave and left it on the roadside outside the wall of the graveyard, Saiful alleged.

Confirming the incident, Md Selim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station, told The Daily Star that police went to the spot and recovered the body.

The body was later buried around 11:30pm at an Ahmadiyya graveyard at Kandipara area of Brahmanbaria town in police presence, the OC said.

Locals in the village have objection regarding burial of Ahmadiyya people in the village graveyard, said Azad Hazari Angur, chairman of Suhilpur Union Parishad.

"I went to the spot after I came to know about the matter, and found the body of the deceased baby outside the graveyard," he added.

The incident drew flak after it went viral in social media.
