Firefighters today recovered the bodies of two workers who had been reported missing on Thursday after they were crushed under a ship’s torn chain in a dockyard at Bandar upazila of Narayanganj.

The victims were identified as Ya Rasul, 23, from the upazila’s Jhawchar and Rasel Miah, 35, from Old Hawli of Chuadanga’s Dhamurhuda upazila, said fire fighters.

The bodies were recovered this afternoon at Bibijhora area, adjacent to Brahmaputra river, Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bandar Police Station said.

OC Rafiqul said the victims, along with four other workers, went to a ship dockyard to remove sand accumulated at the front of a ship.

A chain of the ship tore apart and fell on them and crushed Rasul and Rasel, the OC said.

The four other workers managed to come out from under the chain, he added.

Firefighters conducted a search operation following the incident and finally recovered their bodies this afternoon, the police official added.

The bodies were sent to Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Hospital for autopsy.

“Owner and manager of the dockyard remain absconding following the incident”, OC Rafiqul said, adding that they will take legal action against the owner and manager in this connection.
