BLAST voices concern over killings at Jashore juvenile correctional facility

Detained children have alleged that they are tortured by staffers, the rights group says in statement

Rights organisation Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) today expressed grave concerns over the violent incident at Shishu Unnayan Kendra in Jashore that saw three inmates killed and many others injured on Thursday.

In a statement, the rights organisation urged the authorities concerned to conduct an inquiry to identify the people responsible for the incident, prosecute them and give adequate compensation to the victims' families.

BLAST said children are kept in the Shishu Unnayan Kendra in order to control, correct and teach them discipline and any violence is not expected to take place there.

It said the children have reportedly alleged that the staffers of the Shishu Unnayan Kendra have seriously tortured them.

Any torture is prohibited and is a punishable offence under the constitution and relevant laws, BLAST said in the statement.

The rights body also called upon the authorities concerned to find out whether there was any negligence on the part of the officials and staffers of the Shishu Unnnayan Kendra relating to the incident.
