Bill passed to provide chemical metrology services

Parliament today passed a bill aimed at forming Bangladesh Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements to provide chemical metrology services across the country.

There will be no need to go abroad for chemical tests once the institute is set up. Rather, other countries will be able to test chemicals from Bangladesh.

Science and Technology Affairs Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman placed the bill titled "The Bangladesh Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements (BRICM)" in parliament, which was passed by voice vote.

According to the bill, the institute will facilitate the Designated Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements (Designated Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements DRiCM) to smoothly conduct chemical tests by maintaining the ISO standards.

DRiCM was introduced on June 10, 2012 under the Bangladesh Science and Industry Research Council.

With the new law, this old institute will go under the jurisdiction of Science and Technology Ministry. There will be a director general where the secretary of the Science and Technology Ministry will be the head of the board of directors.

In the objectives of the bill, the minister said by enacting this law, there will be a world standard institute in the country, which will be able to provide internationally acceptable chemical measurements.
