Beating woman: Brother-in-law arrested in Kurigram

Police on Friday night arrested a man in Chilmari upazila of Kurigram in a case filed in Dhaka on charges of torture for dowry and foeticide.

The arrestee, SM Nizam Uddin, is son of Samsul Haque, said Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) Chilmari Police Station.

Sazida Islam Parul on May 11 filed the case in Dhaka against her husband Rezaul Karim Plabon, and four others including Nizam Uddin, younger brother of Plabon.

"A team of police from Dhaka, with the help of Chilmari police, arrested Nizam Uddin from the house of main accused Plabon. Police took him to Dhaka," said OC Aminul Islam.

Sazida was married to Plabon, a staff reporter of Bangla daily Jugantor, on April 2 this year.

"Sazida's husband and his family members severely beat her as she could not meet his demand for dowry. Her foetus was ruined due to the beating.

"She filed a case against five people, including her husband Plabon, with Hatirjheel Police Station on charges of torture for dowry and killing foetus on May 11," the OC said, referring to the case.
