BCL to resist Maolana Mamunul in Chattogram

The leaders and activists of Chattogram City, north and south district units of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) will take up position in different thoroughfares in the port city and Hathazari upazila today afternoon to resist Mamunul Haque, who is scheduled to attend a Tafsirul Quran Mahfil in the upazila after Jumma Prayers today.

Earlier, BCL leaders and activists declared, from a rally organised in front of Chattogram Press Club yesterday afternoon, the resistance program against Mamunul in Chattogram following his derogatory comments on Bangabandhu's sculpture.

Contacted, Zakaria Dastagir, general secretary of Chattogram city unit BCL, said, "Mamunul is trying to spread anarchy in the country through his speech. So, we decided to resist him and our leaders and activists will take up position at different roads in Chattogram in this connection."

Terming Mamunul "a religious trader", Borhan Uddin, president of Chattogram south district unit of BCL said, "Mamunul is trying to create unrest and anarchy in the country through his instigating speech. We will not let it happen in Chattogram."

However, sources inside BCL said an instruction came from the central committee to the local leaders advising them not to lock into any conflict regarding the issue.

No BCL leader in Chattogram admitted to being aware of the instruction on record.

Meanwhile, the mahfil began at 2.00pm after the Jumma Prayers at a field adjacent to Hathazari College.

Mamunul is rumored to deliver his sermon at the mahfil in the evening.

Additional police forces were deployed across the upazila to contain any unfolding situation.
