BCL man beaten up with hammer

A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) man of Patuakhali's Baufal, also a Bachelor degree examinee, was attacked by rivals who broke his left leg with a hammer when he came out of the centre after appearing the examination on Tuesday.

The victim, Salah Uddin Babu, 20, a BA examinee from Kachipara Abdur Rashid Chunnu Mia Degree College, is appearing the exams at Dr Yakub Ali Degree College examination centre. Babu is an activist of Kachipara union unit of BCL, said Saidur Rahman Hasan, president of Baufal upazila unit of BCL.

After the examination ended, Babu came out of the centre when a gang of 15 to 20 people, allegedly led by Hasan (not Saidur Rahman Hasan) and Ashraf, attacked him. They took him to nearby Murgir Bazar and beat him up with a hammer.

Hearing Babu's cry for help, locals first took him to Baufal Upazila Health Complex on Tuesday, where the on-duty doctor referred him to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on yesterday morning.

The attackers fled from the spot.

Babu said the attackers told him that they will insult Baufal municipality mayor in various ways and asked him to film the scene on mobile phone. “They attacked me as I refused,” he added.

Alleged attacker Hasan, son of Motaleb Hawlader, general secretary of the upazila unit of AL, said he was not involved in the attack and he did not know who attacked Babu.

Ashraf also said the same thing to this correspondent over mobile phone.

Contacted, Baufal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khondokar Mostafizur Rahman said no complaint about the matter was filed as of writing of this report at 6:00pm yesterday.

“I will take steps after collecting information in this regard,” he said.
