Garbage has been dumped indiscriminately in front of Faridpur Medical College Hospital gate for years, much to the suffering of the people in the area.

Locals said owners and staff of restaurants, food stores, some diagnostic centres, shopkeepers and some residents have been throwing their food waste, polythene bags  and other used items on both sides of the hospital gate, although there is a big dustbin there.

Municipality workers collect garbage from the dustbin but the garbage in front of the college gate has remained for years, they added.

Rustom Ali Bepari, a tea shop owner in medical college gate area, said it is really unbearable for him to run his shop in the area due to the bad smell from the garbage.

Md Sohid Mia, a medicine shop owner, said although there is a dustbin in the area, many people have been dumping rubbish in front of the medical college gate for years.

Kamal Mridha, a staff of a restaurant, said they dump waste there as the owner tells them to dump it there.

Ajibor Sheikh of another hotel said hotels and many other establishments dump their waste there, so they also do it.

“The environment of the college area is polluted by foul smell as people have been dumping garbage in front of the gate. We hope that municipality authorities will remove the garbage,” said Faridpur Medical College Hospital Principal SM Khobirul Islam.

“We shall remove the garbage from there and also tell the local people not to dump waste there,” said Faridpur Municipality Mayor Sheikh Mahatab Ali.
