Attempt to snatch accused: ‘Rapist’ shot by cops in Sylhet

A rape accused was shot and injured by police when his father allegedly attempted to snatch him from police in Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet last night.

Bullet-hit Khokon Miah, 28, is now undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting SM Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar Police Station.

Khokon is an accused in a case filed by a woman hailed from Khulna on charge of kidnapping and raping her teenage daughter, the OC said.

Police rescued the victim from Khokon’s residence at Yusufpur village in Osmaninagar upazila on Saturday night and also arrested him, the official said.

Khokon used to live in Khulna where he met a widowed woman, the mother of the teenage daughter. “During the last Eid-ul-Azha, he kidnapped the victim and went to Osmaninagar from Khulna,” he said.

After the victim informed her location to her mother over phone recently, the mother filed a case against Khokon on Saturday night at Osmaninagar Police Station, the official added.

“We raided his residence, rescued the victim and while returning to the station, Khokon’s father and some other men attacked the police van and tried to snatch him,” the police said.

“Police opened fire and the accused got shot on his right leg,” he said adding that four policemen were also injured in the attack.

A police assault case has been filed accusing Khokon’s father Jahangir Ali who was arrested later.

Meanwhile, the victim has been admitted at the One-stop Crisis Centre of the hospital while the injured police are undergoing treatment at Osmaninagar upazila health complex.
