Attempt to marry teenager off to her rapist in Jashore

A teenager has been raped allegedly by her cousin in Jhikargacha upazila of Jashore.

Accused Mehedi Hasan (25) is a resident of Raghunathpur Baki village.

According to the girl's family, Mehedi entered his cousin's house and raped her last evening.

The accused was caught by locals but was released as he gave assurance of marrying the girl, her family said.

Local UP member Jamal Hossain said, "I have heard about the incident. It is also being alleged that an influential group is trying to cover up the incident by promising to marry the girl off to her rapist."

Jhikargachha Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mezbah Uddin Ahmed said, "I have received a complaint from the area. We are investigating the incident and appropriate steps will be taken."
