Cumilla Murder in Front of Judge

Attacker sent to jail in fresh case

The murder accused, who stabbed dead another accused inside a courtroom in Cumilla on Monday, was sent to jail yesterday in a case filed for Monday’s murder.

Police filed the case against Hasan, 26, son of Shahidullah from Bhojpara of Laksham upazila, for killing his cousin Faruk, 26, son of Ohidullah from Manoharganj upazila.

Hasan was produced before Jalal Uddin, senior judicial magistrate in Cumilla, who sent him to jail after the accused made confessional statement under section 164, said Inspector Prodip Mondol of Detective Branch (DB) in Cumilla and investigation officer of the case.

Abdullah Al Mamun, additional superintendent of police (ASP) in Cumilla, said the investigation of the murder has been handed over to the DB.

The cousins -- Hasan and Faruk -- along with six others were sued in August 2013 for murdering a man in Manoharganj.

During interrogation, Hasan confessed that he believed his cousin Faruk was responsible for his implication in the previous murder case and for that reason, he murdered him in a premeditated manner, said ASP Mamun.

Meanwhile, security at Cumilla court was beefed up yesterday. Handheld metal detectors were being used to screen people at the entrance and additional members of police were deployed on the premises.

Advocate Jahirul Islam Selim, public prosecutor at the judge’s court, said, “The incident that took place on Monday was unexpected and uncalled for. I will not hold the police responsible for it.”

With lawyers and general public still shaken up by Monday’s murder right in front of a judge and members of police, number of people visiting the court was visibly fewer than usual yesterday.
