Attack on Newsmen: Main accused Fazal arrested

Police early yesterday arrested Fazal Mondol, the main accused of the case filed for beating four journalists in Bhuapur upazila on January 2.

Using information technology, a police team arrested Fazal, son of Kasem Mondol of Routbari village in Bhuapur, from Konabari area in Gazipur district around 2:00am, said Rashidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhuapur Police Station.

Fazal, also general secretary of Govindasi union unit of Truckers Association, was produced before a Tangail court in the morning, with a prayer for seven days’ remand to interrogate him, the OC said, adding that the court granted one-day remand for the accused.

On January 2, gamblers attacked four journalists at Govindasi in Bhuapur when they went there to cover an incident of gambling.

Of them, Sohel and Ashikur were seriously injured.

Sohel filed a case with Bhuapur Police Station on the same night, accusing eight named ones and 30 unidentified others for the attack.

Police arrested four of the accused -- Samad, Salam, Ramjan and Razzak -- early Friday and they were sent to jail yesterday after expiry of their one-day remand.
