Attack on journalist protested

Newsmen and Kulaura upazila unit Bandhusova staged demonstration in Kulaura railway station area in the upazila of the district on Wednesday, demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers of a journalist.

On Saturday night, Kalyan Prasun Champu, Juri upazila correspondent of Bangla daily Prothom Alo, was attacked by criminals in Juri upazila headquarters.

The incident took place when the journalist went there to collect news of a road accident.

The victim said when he was returning home from collecting the news, a masked gang of five youths were following him in Continala bridge area. At one stage, he stopped his motorcycle and asked about their identities. 

At the time, the criminals attacked him with sticks. He sustained injuries in back, shoulder and legs, said the journalist, adding that he was later sent to Kulaura Upazila Health Complex.

A general diary was filed in connection with the incident, said Jahangir Hossain Sardar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Juri Police Station.

Action will be taken against the culprits after identifying them, said the police official.
