Snatching of Held Jamaat Man

AL leaders among 150 sued

Seventy-three named and 77 unnamed people have been sued on charge of snatching a detained Jamaat leader from police in Sirajganj's Ullapara upazila.

The accused include Saiful Islam Khoka, vice president of Koira union unit Awami League (AL), and Rashidul Islam, an activist of the union unit of Chhatra League.

Sub-inspector of Ullapara Police Station Ripon Kumar Shah filed the case on Monday night, said Dewan Koushik Ahmed, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Police arrested five people in the case. The arrestees are Jewel Rana, Khairul Islam, Afzal Hossain, Abdul Mazid and Suruj Miah. They were produced before a court that sent them to jail yesterday.

Alauddin Al Azad, 40, acting secretary of Ullapara upazila unit Jamaat, is accused in 20 criminal cases, said the OC.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided Koira Charpara around 3:00pm on Monday to arrest Azad.

When police were taking him to the police station in handcuffs, a group of Jamaat-Shibir and AL men, led by local AL leader Saiful Islam Khoka, attacked police and snatched the Jamaat man.

Saiful and Rashidul Islam are cousins of Alauddin, said the police official.

Police are raiding different areas to arrest Alauddin, he said.

Md Golam Mostafa, convener of upazila unit AL, said they have already taken decision to take organisational action against the accused AL men.
