AL leader among six sued in Joypurhat

A local Awami League (AL) leader among six people have been sued on charge of attempting to kill two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders in Joypurhat.

Abu Bakar Siddique, general secretary of Joypurhat district unit of BCL, filed the case with Sadar Police Station on Sunday night, said Siddiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.

The accused are Hasanuzzaman Mithu, 43, joint general secretary of Joypurhat Sadar upazila unit of AL and chairman of Jamalpur Union Parishad, Tajmul Huda Ripon, 30, of Natunhat area in Joypurhat town, Zakir Mollah, 30, of Sahebpara, Imran Hossain, 27, of Bhatkana village, Munna Parvez, 33, of Nurpur village and Zakaria Roky, 30, of Puranpoil village in Sadar upazila.

According to the case statement, Zakaria Hossain Raza and Abu Bakar Siddique, president and secretary of Joypurhat district unit of BCL, were returning home on Friday night.

As the two reached Chitrapara around 11:45pm, a gang fired gunshot on them, but the bullet missed its target. Late, the criminals hit the BCL leaders with iron rods and flee the scene when locals rushed to the spot, hearing scream.

The gang wanted to kill them but failed. Later, the injured were taken to Joypurhat Modern Hospital.

They also threatened to kill the BCL leaders, mentioned in the case.

The OC said police were investigating the case.

They will take step to arrest the culprits after the investigation, said the police official.
