9 get life term in Kishoreganj

A Kishoreganj court on Tuesday sentenced nine people to life imprisonment in connection with a case for killing a schoolteacher in 2004.

The convicts are Aminul Haque, Ripon Mia, Ratan Mia, Noor Uddin, Dulal Mia, Mustafa, Abu Sayeed, Rashid and Noor Uddin member.

Judge Mohammad Abu Taher of Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court III delivered the verdict on Tuesday noon, Court Inspector Taufiqul Islam said.

The court also acquitted another accused in the case Mohammad Shahid as charges brought against him were not proved.

According to the case statement, the convicts hacked schoolteacher Shahed Ali of Bir Hazipur village in Hossainpur upazila when he was returning home by a rickshaw on April 4 in 2004 over previous enmity, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rushed him to Hossainpur Upazila Health Complex and then to Kishoreganj General Hospital, from where he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

He died at the hospital on April 24, 20 days after the incident.

Earlier on April 9, victim's son Mohammad Farid filed a case with Hossainpur Police Station accusing 10 people and police pressed charge-sheet on August 17 the same year.
