8 die after taking ‘excessive’ alcohol in Khulna

Eight people, including a woman and two siblings, died reportedly after taking “excessive liquor” in Khulna city and Rupsha upazila of the district yesterday and today.

The deceased were identified as Taposh Das, 35 and his brother Proshenjit Das, 28, Sujon Shil, 25, Rahul Biswas, 25,  Parimol Das, 30, Amit Shil, 22,  Indrani Biswas,16, and Dip Das,22.

Of the deceased, Taposh died during treatment at Gazi Medical College Hospital and seven others died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) in different times yesterday and today, our Khulna correspondent reports quoting family members, police and doctors.

ASM Abdur Razzak, Civil Surgeon of Khulna told our correspondent that after talking to victims’ family members it was known that they had taken alcohol.

Taposh suddenly became ill yesterday noon and was admitted to Gazi Medical College Hospital where he died around 3:00pm, said Amol Das, a relative of Taposh.

After an hour, his brother Proshenjit became ill and he was then admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) where doctors declared him dead 8:00am today.

Besides, Sujon Shil, a student of Rupsha College, died at the KMCH early today while Rahul Biswas at KMCH around 10:00am today, said Ashlam Bahar Bulbul, officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station in Khulna.

Parimol was declared dead at the same hospital yesterday noon, said Jakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rupsha Police Station.

Amit Shil, Indrani Biswas and Dip Das died at the KMCH this evening, said Dr Md Azmol Hossain, assistant register of unit-4 of the KMCH.

Family members assured that they felt severe pain at chest and abdomen with vomiting, Azmol added.
