6 get life term for murder

Sessions judge's courts in Kishoreganj and Netrakona yesterday sentenced a total of six people, including two siblings, to life imprisonment in separate murder cases.

A Kishoreganj court sentenced two siblings to life imprisonment for killing one of their neighbours over land dispute in 2012.

The convicts are Akkas Mia, 52, and his younger brother Tara Mia, 32, sons of late Abed Ali of Lolitabad area in Sadar upazila.

Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim of Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court-2 also fined the convicts Tk 5 lakh each, Court inspector Toufiq Ahmed said. 

According to the prosecution, there had been a land related dispute between the convicts and Abdul Khaleque Sarker of the village. 

As a sequel to the conflict, convict Akkas locked in an altercation with Khaleque's son Asadur Rahman on June 30, 2012.

Later, when Khaleque and his younger brother Saidur Rahman rushed to the spot to save Asadur, Akkas and his men stabbed Khaleque with sharp weapon, leaving him severely injured.

Family members admitted injured Khaleque to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the same evening.

In Netrakona, four people were sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a farmer in Durgapur upazila in 2006.

The convicts are Azizul Haque, 48, Sobhan Mia, 51, Sirajul Haque, 41, and Moti Mia, 48, of Chandigarh village.

District and Sessions Judge KM Rasheduzzaman also fined the four convicts Tk 1 lakh each. In default, they are to suffer three months more in jail, Court Inspector Golok Chandra Basak said.

The court also sentenced six other accused -- Babul Mia, 43, Abu Taleb, 37, Mohit, 40, Abdul Kashem, 53, Abu Taher, 43, and Abdul Haque, 35 -- in the case to three years' imprisonment and fined them Tk 10,000 each.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Iftekhar Uddin said farmer Shahid Mia of Chandigarh village was killed by the convicts over a land dispute on August 2, 2006.
