40 including 9 cops hurt in clash

At least 40 people, including nine policemen, were injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy at Pukuria village in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur yesterday morning.

The injured were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, Sadarpur and Bhanga upazila health complexes.

Abu Sayed Mia, chairman of Manikdaha Union Parishad, said there was a longstanding conflict between Momrez Takuldar, 60, of Kha Kanda Nazirpur village and Karim Matobbar, 70, of Pukuria area over establishing supremacy in the area.

Two supporters of Momrez Takuldar joined Karim Matobbar group on Wednesday. For this reason, both rival groups locked in a clash with lethal weapons around 7:00am yesterday.

People of seven villages took part in the violent clash. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and opened fire to bring the situation under control.

Around 40 people, including nine policemen, were injured in the three-hour long clash.

Two houses and five shops were also vandalised during the incident.

Gazi Rabiul Islam, additional superintendent of police (Bhanga circle), said on information, police rushed to the spot and fired 36 rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
