10 killed in road accidents in 5 districts
Ten people were killed and at least 22 others injured in five separate road accidents on Sunday in Sirajganj, Faridpur, Tangail, Sunamganj and Lalmonirhat districts.
In Sirajganj, three people were killed and at least 20 others injured when a bus turned over after trying to avoid an oncoming motorcycle on the Dhaka-Bogura highway.
The incident took place at Talukdar Bazar in Kamarkhanda upazila around 1:00pm, our Pabna correspondent reports, quoting Syed Shahid Alam, officer-in-charge of Padma Bridge West Police Station.
Identities of the deceased could not be known yet.
"A Bogura-bound bus of Shah Fateh Ali Paribahan turned over and fell into a ditch after it hit an oncoming motorbike. The driver lost control of the bus in an attempt to avoid the bike," the OC said.
Two passengers of the bus and one motorcycle rider died on the spot while about 18 to 20 people were injured. They have been taken to Sirajganj General Hospital.
In Faridpur, a motorcycle rider and his pillion passenger were killed after their motorcycle was hit by a bus coming from the opposite direction at Ghanshampur area under Sadar upazila around 11:00am on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Idris Paul, 49, of Char Noshipur village, and Monayam Hossain, 41, of Durgapur village. Both were cow traders, reports our Faridpur correspondent, quoting Md Belal Hossain, a sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station.
"Idris Paul died on the spot and Monayam Hossain died on the way to Dhaka around 2:00pm," he said.
Police seized the truck but the driver managed to flee from the scene, the SI added.
In Tangail, a man and a woman were killed when a passenger bus ran over them at the on the Bangabandhu Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place near Golchakkar area in Bhuapur upazila at 5:00pm when a Dhaka-bound bus hit them while they were crossing the highway, leaving them dead on the spot, reports our Tangail correspondent, quoting Jayed Abdullah Bin Sarwar, a sub-inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.
One of the victims was identified as Mayeen Uddin Hamim, 25, according to an identity card recovered from his possession by police. The identity of the female victim could not be known immediately, SI Jayed said.
Police believe that the victims were students and were on a tour near the Bangabandhu Bridge area, he also said.
Police seized the passenger bus from Kamakkhar intersection under Kalihati upazila but its driver and helpers had fled, the SI added.
In Sunamganj, two teenagers, including one Dakhil examinee, died and two others were injured in a road accident at Brahmangaon area in Sadar upazila on Sunday evening.
The deceased were identified as Pabel Ahmed, 17, a Dakhil examinee, and Sohag Miah, 17. The injured are Shakil Nur, 17, and Ashik Miah, 18. All of them are from Maijbari village, reports our Sylhet correspondent, quoting police.
They were riding a motorcycle at high speed to Maijbari village in the upazila from nearby Ambari village under Doarabazar upazila when the driver lost control and hit a roadside electric pole, said Sohidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sunamganj Police Station, quoting witnesses.
"Locals rushed them to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared two of them dead and referred the two injured to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital," the OC added.
In Lalmonirhat, a college student died after he was hit by a stone-laden truck on Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway on Sunday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Nurnabi Islam, an eleventh-grade of Duhuli Technical College hailing from Madanpur village of Aditmari upazila in the district, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent, quoting police.
The truck from Burimari Land Port hit Nurnabi while he was talking to a friend on the roadside in Namuri in the upazila and fled from the scene immediately, said Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Aditmari Police Station.
