3 jailed for arranging child marriage

A mobile court sentenced three people to six months’ imprisonment each for arranging marriage of an underage girl at Arazi Sgeikhsundor village in Hatibandha upazila on Wednesday night.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Samiul Amin led the court, said police.

The convicts are marriage registrar Shafiqul Islam, 36, matchmaker Mosarraf Hossain,42, and bride’s father Altaf Hossain,47, of the village.

On information, a police team went to the village around 9:00pm and arrested the three while they were arranging marriage of a female student of Class IX at a local school.

However, the bridegroom and his men managed to flee the scene.

The arrestees were later produced before the court, led by the UNO, that pronounced the verdict, said Officer-in-Charge Omar Farooque of Hatibandha Police Station.
