3 of a family electrocuted while fishing in Gaibandha

Three members of a family were electrocuted while they were fishing in Gaibandha's Sundarganj upazila.

The incident took place at Dhopadanga village in the upazila around 7:30pm today, reports our Bogura correspondent quoting police.

Khan Mohammad Abdullahil Zaman, officer-in-charge of Sundarganj Police Station, confirmed the incident to The Daily Star.

The deceased were identified as, Rekha Begum (55), her son Ajaul Hauqe (35), and her grandson Sujon Mia (14).

Rekha and Ajaul died after being taken to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital while Sujon died on the spot, locals said.

The incident took place when the three went to the pond near their home to catch fish. An electric cable from a bamboo pole had fallen into the water body, electrocuting Ajaul first.

Rekha and Sujon were also electrocuted when they tried to rescue Ajaul. Locals rescued them and sent the mother and son to the hospital where they died while undergoing treatment, said AKM Samsul haque, a local journalist.

Confirming the incident, OC Abdullahil Zaman said two policemen have been sent to the spot and details will be known once they return.
