3 AL men killed in 2 districts

Three local leaders of ruling Awami League (AL) and its youth wing were killed in separate incidents in Patuakhali and Tangail during the Eid vacation.

Our Patuakhali correspondent reported that: two local leaders of ruling AL were killed allegedly by their rivals over establishing supremacy in Baufal upazila on Sunday.

The deceased are Rakib Uddin Rumon, 33, vice-president of Keshabpur Union unit Juba League, and Riyad Hossain Ishat, 24, an activist of the union unit Swechchhasebak League.

Police, however, detained nine people on Monday for their alleged involvement in the murder, Patuakhali Additional Superintendent of Police Mahfuzur Rahman said.

Quoting locals, police said a group of 50 to 60 criminals swooped on the duo while they were taking tea at a tea-stall at Keshabpur Bazar around 7:00pm on Sunday and stabbed them indiscriminately.

Hearing scream, villagers took them to Baufal Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors declared Ishat dead, while Rumon succumbed to his injuries around 9:00pm the same night.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Patuakhali General Hospital for autopsy on Monday morning, police said.

Away in Tangail, a union level leader of AL was killed in Gopalpur upazila on Friday.

The deceased, Aminul Islam Nixon, 48, was former general secretary of Hadira Union unit AL.

A group of unidentified criminals waylaid Nixon in Norilla area while he was returning Dhanbari upazila and stabbed him.

Locals took him to nearby Madhupur Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors declared him dead.
