21 policemen injured in Brahmanbaria road accident

Twenty-one policemen and two drivers were injured when a bus collided with two pick-up vans in Brahmanbaria this morning.

The injured policemen include two inspectors – Md Mokbul Hossain and Md Belayet Hossain, Assistant Sub-Inspector Johirul Islam and 18 constables.

The accident took place around 8:00am on Cumilla-Sylhet highway at West Medda Markazpara in the town when a bus coming from Dhaka collided with the pick-up vans, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Roish Uddin told our local correspondent.

All the injured policemen who were on the pick-up vans were going to Brahmanbaria from Kishoreganj. They were deployed to carry out special duties to maintain law and order situation after Hefajat-e Islam mayhem in Brahmanbaria for three days from March 26 to 28.

Additional SP Md Roish Uddin said that seven of the injured, including two drivers, were in critical condition.

They were sent to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in the capital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Police arrested the bus driver of Econo Pribahan and his helper from the scene and kept them at the Brahmanbaria Police Lines.

Arifuzzaman Himel, a doctor at the emergency department of Brahmanbaria General Hospital, said six of the injured had been referred to Dhaka as their condition was critical. Five other injured were admitted to Brahmanbaria General Hospital and 12 were given first aid.
