Idols ransacked in Mymensingh

A youth was held on charge of vandalising a idol of Durga in Lalmonirhat while criminals ransacked some idols in Mymensingh, report our correspondents.

Locals caught a youth red handed while he along with seven to eight culprits was vandalising a statue of Durga at Radha Ballav Durga Temple in Bhadai Club Bazar area of Lalmonirhat’s Aditmari upazila on Tuesday night.

Arrestee Nur Islam Pacha, 25, son of Shamser Ali of Shibbari village, was later handed over to police.

Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Aditmari Police Station, said a gang suddenly entered the temple and started vandalising the Durga statue. At the time, locals caught Nur Islam Pacha.

However, his cohorts managed to flee the scene, said Amal Chandra Barmon, general secretary of the temple.

A case was filed with the police station on Wednesday night, the OC said.

Meanwhile, miscreants ransacked some idols at a puja mandap at Ishwargram village in Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh yesterday.

Officer-in-Charge of Muktagachha Police Station Mohammad Ali Mahmud said some idols were found vandalised at the puja mandap early in the morning.

On information, they visited the spot, said the OC.

Special security measures have been taken to avert any untoward incident at 104 puja mandaps in the upazila, said Subarna Sarkar, upazila nirbahi officer.
