A mobile court today seized around 100 tonnes of rice after raiding a rice trading centre at Lalpur upazila in Natore and sentenced its owner one year jail for stocking up rice illegally.

The mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md Murtuza Khan raided Sumon Traders at Gopalpur of the upazila and sentenced Chandu Mia for one year jail, our local correspondent reports quoting the magistrate.

Razzaqul Islam, additional district magistrate of Natore said, as per the terms and condition, Chandu Mia is entitled to keep a stock of only 15 tonnes of rice under his possession. But, he kept over a hundred tonnes of rice illegally, he told our Natore correspondent.

In line with the government’s directives, the law enforcement agencies have already started massive drives across the country against the dishonest traders and businessmen to keep the price of rice in the market within tolerable level.

The same mobile court also carried out drives at seven others rice mills in the area for the last four days and fined Tk 4.10 lakh for stocking up rice to create an artificial crisis in the market.
