Nasirnagar attack: UP chairman Akhi suspended

The LGRD ministry today suspended Haripur union parishad chairman, the prime accused in a case filed in connection with an arson attack on Hindus in Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria on October 30 last year.

Dewan Atikur Rahman Akhi, chairman of the union parishad, was suspended temporarily in line with an order given by the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) ministry today, a correspondent reports quoting Md Liakat Ali, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Nasirnagar.

According to the order, the incident of communal attack on the Hindu houses and temples is sensational.

Akhi, who was arrested in connection with cases related to the attack, instigated the attackers by abusing administrative power, the suspension order reads.

He was suspended under UP law 34 (1), the UNO said quoting the letter.

Earlier, he was arrested from Bhatara in Dhaka on January 5.

Unruly zealots carried out a synchronised attack on the Hindu community in the upazila and vandalised around 100 homes and at least five temples and looted valuables over a Facebook post On October 30.

The attackers also beat up over 100 people of the minority community.
