Mystery shrouds housewife's death

Mystery shrouded the death of a housewife at Uttarpara village in Nilphamari Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The deceased, Shewly Akhtar, 28, was daughter of Atiar Rahman of the village.

Deceased's mother Selina Begum said her daughter was married to Obaidur Rahman, 32, son of Sakimuddin of the village five years ago and apparently they were living peacefully.

Although we gave Tk 3 lakh dowry during the marriage, recently Obaidur and his family members started torturing Shewly for additional Tk 70 thousand, she said.

On Tuesday night, Obaidur and his family tortured Shewly mercilessly and later, sensing danger, they took her near her father's house and abandoned her beside a road there, Selina said, adding that they rescued her from the spot and called a rural physician for her treatment but she died while undergoing treatment around4:00am.

Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Babul Akhtar said victim's brother Asaduzzaman filed a murder case with the police station accusing 11 people, including Obaidur.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Nilphamari 100-bed Hospital for autopsy, the OC said, adding that they detained Jahura Begum, wife of Obaidur's elder brother Taslim Uddin, for interrogation.
