Muhammad Zamir elected as IPHRC member

Bangladesh candidate former ambassador Muhammad Zamir has been elected as a new member of the Jeddah-based Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), an expert body of OIC.

Zamir was elected for three years starting from February 2018, said a Foreign Ministry press release today.

IPHRC has total 18 members and 9 rotating members, who were elected from three geographical groups -Arab, Asia, Africa.

The election was held on July 11 on the concluding day of the 44th Conference of the Foreign Ministers (CFM) of OIC through secret ballots. Apart from Bangladesh, Turkey and Uzbekistan have also been elected for the IPHRC from Asian group.

Member states of the Asian Group in the OIC are: Afghanistan, Albenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brunei, Guyana, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Suriname, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Zamir, a former Ambassador and a former chief information commissioner, also served at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah.
