A mob beat three suspected robbers to death in Meherpur Sadar upazila early today.

The incident took place at Rajapur village around 1:00am, our Kushtia correspondent reports quoting Azbahar Ali, additional superintendent of police in Meherpur.

The dead were identified as Faruq Hossain, 36, son of Abdur Razzak and Rafiq Hossain, 42, son of Nazer Ali of Chokshyamnagar in Sadar upazila; and Shariful Islam, 33, son of Ayub Ali of Juginda in Gangni upazila of the district.

Police said a gang of five to six men entered Rajapur village shortly after the midnight.

A farmer named Bhasan Ali, who was pumping water at his paddy field that time, asked their identities. But the gang members became angry and beat him up.

Informed by Bhasan over mobile phone, his relatives reached the spot and chased the gang.

Sensing danger, the alleged robbers hurled five hand-made bombs to make their way to flee the scene.

But the mob managed to catch three of them along with a pistol and a bullet and gave them a good beating, leaving one dead on the spot around 1:00am, ASP Azbahar said.

On information, Sadar police rushed to the spot and rescued two other gang members from the locals in critical condition.

Injured Rafiq and Shariful were declared dead when they were taken to Meherpur General Hospital around 1:30am.
