‘Militant’ held for 'plotting' Ashulia bank heist

Police today claimed arrest of a banned Ansarullah Bangla Team militant who said to have masterminded the bank robbery of Ashulia in April 21 earlier this year.

The arrestee was identified as Mahfuzul Islam Shamim alias Suman – the eleventh man to have been arrested in connection with the robbery that left eight people shot dead including the local branch manager in broad daylight.

Nazmul Hasan Firoz, assistant superintendent of police in Savar, told The daily Star of the arrest. “He plotted the bank robbery. He was arrested from Badda area in Dhaka around 1:00am.”

On secret information, police cracked down on a house in Madhya Badda area and detained Suman, the ASP said. “That day Suman was equipped with a rifle and led the bank robbery.”
