UP member killed in clash over land dispute

A Union Parishad (UP) member was killed and his brother sustained severe injuries in an attack by their rivals allegedly over a land dispute in Gangni upazila of Meherpur yesterday.

The deceased, Kamal Hossain, 30, UP member of Sholotaka union in the upazila, was also an activist of ruling Awami League.

Kamal's elder brother Kafil Uddin, who is undergoing treatment at Kushtia Medical College Hospital, also received stab injury when he tried to save his brother.

Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain of Gangni Police Station said there had been a longstanding row between Kamal's family and one Shukur Ali of Sholotaka village over the ownership of a piece of land.

As a sequel, Kamal engaged in an altercation with Shukur's son Mazedul at a local tea stall around 9:30am, he said.

An hour later, Mazedul along with four to five others swooped on Kamal and stabbed him indiscriminately when he was returning home, leaving his dead on the spot.
