Marine students want principal's removal

Students of Bagerhat Institute of Marine Technology continued their protest for the second day yesterday, demanding resignation of the principal for corruption and irregularities.

They burned tyres on the campus at Chitali Baitpur.

The agitating students said the principal allowed outsiders to stay in the hostel for rent. Students have to stay out of the campus due to shortage of seats in the hostel because of that, they added.

The institute gets Tk 1,84,000 per year from the government for paying gas bill, but the principal takes money for gas from them also, the students said.

They said although there is a water treatment plant, they are deprived of pure drinking water as there is no one to run it. There is a budget for the management of water pumps, but there are no people for it, and although there is a cleaner on paper, there is no one in reality, they added.

The government allocated Tk 84,000 for housekeeping, but the money for that was also taken from the students by the principal, they said.

Principal Sirajul Islam said some students are protesting unnecessarily as he has not committed any irregularities.
