Man killed in Sherpur elephant attack

A farmer was killed in a wild elephant attack in Jhenigati upazila of Sherpur last night.

Uttam Marak, 55, hailed from the upazila, reports a correspondent from Sherpur.

A herd of wild elephants came down from the hills of Meghalaya state of India and rampaged Sandhyakura village around 8:00pm, according to the local sources.

When Uttam along with some villagers were trying to drive away the elephants, he was trampled at one stage, said Ayub Ali, chairman of Nolkura union parishad.

Locals rushed him to Jhenigati Upazila Health Complex but he was shifted to Sherpur Sadar Hospital when his condition deteriorated.

He succumbed to his injuries two hours after the incident, UP chairman Ayub said.

Over the last six months, at least 12 people were killed in a spate of attacks of wild animals, according to a Prothom Alo report.
