Man killed in clash

A man was killed and four others were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Tetoy village in Derai upazila of Sunamganj yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mojnu Mia, 62, of the village in the upazila, said police.

Quoting locals, Md Habibullah, additional superintendent of police, said there was a longstanding conflict between Mujibur Rahman, chairman of Kulonjo Union Parishad, and Donel Chowdhury, a resident of the same area, over the ownership of a water body near the village.

As a sequel to the conflict, the men of Mujibur Rahman and Donel Chowdhury locked in an altercation over the issue around 11:00am yesterday.

At one stage of the altercation, the rival groups armed with sharp weapons attacked each other, leaving five people from both sides injured. Of them, Monju died on the spot.

The others were admitted to a hospital.

On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy, said the ASP.

Donel Chowdhury went into hiding soon after the incident, said the police official.
