Man jailed for torturing wife for dowry

A Gaibandha court on Tuesday sentenced a man to three years imprisonment for torturing his wife for dowry.

The convict is Jala Mia, 36, of Chuniyakhali village in Sadar upazila.

Judge Wahiduzzaman of Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court also fined the convict Tk 5,000, in default, he is to suffer another month in jail.

The prosecution case said Shova Rani of Ratanpur village in Fulchhari upazila married Jalal Mia in 2014. After the marriage, Jalal Mia put pressure on Shova Rani to bring Tk one lakh from her father as dowry. But the poor father was unable to pay the dowry.

Failing to get any money, Jalal flew into a rage and beat up Shova. Later, he sent Shova to her father's house, saying that if she wanted to return she would have to bring the dowry money.

Finding no other alternative, Shova Rani filed a case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court, accusing her husband of torturing her.

After examining the case record and witnesses, the court pronounced the verdict.

Jalal Mia has been absconding since filing of the case, court inspector Abdul Majid said, adding that the sentence will come into force from the date of his arrest.
