Legal aid services to be ensured at grassroots level: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government had taken steps to ensure legal aid services at the country's grassroots level.

The prime minister said this while addressing the inaugural function of the National Legal Aid Services Day 2016 at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital, Dhaka.

The day is observed on April 28 every year.

From the programme, Sheikh Hasina also inaugurated the national helpline call centre of the national legal aid service through talking to a female official over phone.

The legal aid seekers could avail themselves of free services from the helpline round the clock dialing 16430 or sending SMS.

On the occasion, two legal aid recipients --Sheuli Akhtar and Ranjit Kumar Roy Nandi -- shared their experiences with the audience.

Chaired by Law Minister Advocate Anisul Huq, the programme was also addressed by Law Secretary Abu Saleh Sk Md Zahirul Haque. Director of the National Legal Aid Services Organisation (NLASO) Md Malik Abdullah Al-Amin delivered the address of welcome.
