Landslide in Sylhet kills 2

At least two workers were killed and several others were injured after a landslide occurred in Sylhet’s Companiganj during hill cutting this morning.

However, local sources said the death toll was six – all of them workers who were cutting the hill in Bholaganj around 10:00am, our local correspondent reports.

Police identified the two dead bodies as Abdul Hadi, 36, and Abdul Kabir, 35, from Netrokona district, said Sugyan Chakma, additional police superintendent of Sylhet.

“The death toll may rise,” he added.

“A total of 13 labours were extracting stones from the soil since morning,” said Md Jamaluddin, chairman of Poschim Islampur uinon. “The landslide occurred around 10:00am.”

Nasreen Jahan Fatema, Companiganj upazila vice-chairman, said six people died in the hill slide.
