Kushtia ‘outlaw’ killed in 'gunfight' with cops

An outlaw was killed in what police said was gunfight in Kushtia Sadar upazila early today.

The deceased was identified as Amirul Islam, 40, son of Jabed Ali from Sadar upazila and said to be a leader of Gono Bahini, our local correspondent reports quoting police.

District’s Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge Sabbirul Islam said lawmen cracked down on Kushtia-Rajbari highway receiving intelligence on a robbery-in-progress around 2:30am.

“Police told them to surrender, but instead they opened gunfire. Lawmen were compelled to fire back. Amirul came in the line of fire and suffered four bullet wound,” he said.

“His accomplices managed to flee. He was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police recovered a saw, four locally-made pistols, three sharp weapons and three bullets from the scene,” he said.

Four policemen were said to have been injured.

Amirul was accused in five robberies, 2 abductions and three murders cases filed with separate police stations. The dead body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.
