BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia today underscored the need for national consensus with international support to combat the transnational terrorism and militancy.

“Terrorism and militancy is a transnational crisis. Bangladesh is not an isolated part of the issue. And thus, we have to go forward based on a national consensus with the support of international community to combat the militancy,” Khaleda said in a statement this evening.

The BNP chief also expressed her grave concern over the recent menace of militancy in some areas across the country including Sylhet, Dhaka, Chittagong and Comilla.

She also extended her congratulation to the members of para commandos and other members of different law enforcement agencies for concluding the “Operation Twilight” successfully.

The former prime minister extended her sympathy at the bereaved family members of the civilians who met tragic end of their lives during the operation in the militant den in Sylhet.

Khaleda said combating terrorism and militancy is not possible by only carrying out the act of repression.

Undemocratic and irresponsible governance, corruption, absence of justice and unemployment issues are the key causes behind the emergence of militancy in the country, she opined in the statement.

Khaleda said question has risen in the people’s minds over the sudden menace of militancy when the country is passing through a sanative time.

“I am calling upon concerned people to take the issue under consideration to erase the doubt from the people’s minds,” she said.
