Another held with revolver, bullets

Masked criminals hacked a Jubo League activist to death in Kabirhat area in Begumganj upazila of the district on Friday.

The dead, Jahir Uddin, 30, son of Nurul Amin of Tita Hajra village, was an activist of local Jubo League unit, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League.

Quoting locals, police said four to five criminals, wearing masks, swooped on Jahir while he was sitting with his friends at a tea stall in Kabirhat area around 9:00pm.

Sensing danger, Jahir started running but the criminals caught him. They hacked him indiscriminately and left the scene. Villagers rushed Jahir to the local health complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Being informed, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy, said Golam Faruk, officer-in-charge of Begumganj Model Police Station.

In another incident, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday arrested a Jubo League activist from Basanterbagh village in the upazila and recovered a firearm and five bullets from his possession.

The arrestee is Alamgir Hossain, 28, son of Habib Ullah of the village.

Acting on tip-off, a team of Rab-11 raided Alamgir's house early yesterday and arrested him along with a revolver and five bullets, said Mohammad Shahid, sub-inspector of Rab-11.

The arrestee was later handed over to Begumganj Model Police Station, the SI added.
