Journo murder: Shahzadpur mayor sent to jail after remand

Shahzadpur municipality mayor Halimul Haque Miru and five other accused were sent to jail today on completion of their five-day remand in a case filed on charge of killing journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul.

The Court of Shahzadpur Senior Judicial Magistrate passed the order after they were produced before it, our Pabna correspondent reports quoting Md Rezaul Haque, officer-in-charge of Shahzadpur Police Station.

On February 13, Senior Judicial Magistrate Hasibul Haque of Shahzadpur placed each of them on a five-day remand in the case.

The other five accused are the mayor's aide Nasir Uddin, Nazmul Khan, Alamgir Hossain, Arshad Ali and Zahir Sheikh.

During interrogation, police got important information about the incident, the OC said. He however declined to elaborate it.

On February 2, Shimul, Shahzadpur correspondent of Bangla daily Samakal, received a bullet during the clash when the municipality mayor and his men opened fire. Shimul succumbed to his injuries on the following day.

The victim's wife filed the case accusing Mayor Miru, his two brothers and 15 others on the same day.

Police has so far arrested 12 people including the mayor in the case.
