Grandmother dies from shock of Sirajganj journo’s death

Half-day hartal in Shahzadpur tomorrow

The grandmother of journalist Shimul, who was killed in a factional clash of Awami League in Sirajganj, met a tragic end of her life from a stroke after hearing the death news of her grandson.

Abdul Hakim Shimul, Sirajganj correspondent of Daily Samakal succumbed to his injuries this afternoon, a day into he sustained bullet wounds during an infighting of local Awami League.

Hearing the news of his death, Shimul’s grandmother Rokeya Begum, aged around 90, died from stroke around 7:00pm, reports our Pabna correspondent.

Meanwhile, local journalists today called for a half-day hartal for tomorrow across the Shahzadpur upazila in the district protesting the killing.

Shafiqul Hasan, president of Shahzadpur Reporters’ Club, made the announcement calling upon people from all walks of life to observe the six-hour hartal to be started from 6:00am.

Besides, police detained Mintu and Pintu, both are younger brothers of Shahzadpur Municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru, who opened fire during the yesterday’s infighting. 

At least 10 people were injured during a factional clash of local Awami League at Shahzadpur upazila of the district yesterday.

Four of the injured including the journalist received bullet injury, Abul Hasnat, assistant superintendent of police in Sirajganj, told our Pabna correspondent yesterday.

Earlier in the day, supporters of Shahzadpur Municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru reportedly beat up Bijoy Hossain, former vice president of Shahzadpur College unit Chhatra League, over the previous enmity, police said.

Miru allegedly opened fire when the supporters of Bijoy brought out a procession in Monirampur area this evening protesting the assault, triggering the clash.

Shimul was taken to Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra in a critical state, the police official said.

As his condition was worsening, he was being taken to Dhaka today. He died on way to the capital around 1:00pm, our Natore correspondent reports quoting Miraz Uddin Ahmed, Sirajganj superintendent of police.

On the way, Shimul’s condition deteriorated. He was rushed to Sakhwat Memorial Hospital, but the duty doctor at the hospital declared him dead, the SP said.
