JMB man gets life term

A court here on Monday sentenced an activist of banned Islamist militant organisation Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life term imprisonment in an arms case.

Judge of Special Tribunal-2, also additional district judge of Chapainawabganj, Ziaur Rahman handed down the verdict in presence of the JMB man.

The convict is Md Selim, alias Harun Mistry, 34, son of Durul Hoda of Johurpur-Bokripara under Sadar upazila.

According to the prosecution, members of Rapid Action Battalion 5 (Rab) from Rajshahi raided a house in Johurpur-Bokripara village around 1:00pm on July 7, 2009 and arrested Selim, an active member of JMB.  They recovered one pistol, two magazines and nine bullets from his possession.

After Selim's confessional statement, Rab members raided his father-in-law Kamruzzaman's house on July 8 and recovered six guns and ten bullets hidden near the house.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Hossain of Rab-5 filed a case against Selim under arms act with Sadar Police Station that day.

On completion of investigation, Investigation Officer SI Shahin Akond of the police station pressed charges on August 6, 2009.

After examining 13 prosecution witnesses and relevant documents, the court handed down the verdict.
