Erosion by the Jhinai river has devoured a portion of the Kurni-Fotepur road in Mirzapur upazila in couple of days, hampering communication in around a dozen villages.

People have to pass through adjacent private lands to go to their destinations.

"As movement between Hilora and Boilanpur remains suspended, we are trying to construct an earthen road on the adjacent lands to maintain communication," said Fotepur Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Rouf.

Erosion by the river turned serious this year after increase in water level during the last few days, devouring several shops and vast tracts of croplands at the union, he said.

As erosion continues, Haat Fotepur High School, Haat Fotepur Bazar, Hilora High School and Hilora Bazar are under threat of erosion, he added.

District Water Development Board Executive Engineer Shajahan Siraj said necessary steps will be taken to check erosion after he visits the affected areas.
