Jamuna boat capsize: 2 more bodies found; death toll reaches 5

Rescue workers recovered two more bodies from Jamuna this morning, a day after a boat capsized in the river in Chowhali upazila of Sirajganj.

With this, the death toll from the boat accident stood at five, reports our Pabna correspondent.

Divers of fire service along with the law enforcers were conducting operation till filing of this report to rescue 12 other missing passengers.

Officer-in-charge of Chowhali Police Station Md Rashidul Islam said the fire fighters recovered two bodies floating in the river in Jotpara area in the morning.

One of them was identified as Md Afzal Hossain (40) of Koujuri village in Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj, the OC said.

A passenger boat from Enayetpur, carrying at least 70 people, sank in the river in Sthalchar area yesterday noon due to strong current, said Md Nazrul Islam, chairman of Sthalchar union parishad.

Later, three bodies were recovered from the river.

Talking to The Daily Star, Md Monjurul Alam, station officer of Shahzadpur Fire Station, said a team of the divers of the fire brigade reached the spot yesterday night and they are conducting rescue operation at different points of the river to recover or rescue the victims.
