Inhuman torture on Bogra woman

UP member takes the lead in arbitration

A 50-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after a local union parishad (UP) member beat her up mercilessly, blaming her for not obeying their decision.

The incident took place at an arbitration held at the victim's house at Kamarchhoto village in Gabtoli upazila of the district on November 30.

The victim, Amena Bibi, wife of Habibur Rahman of the village, is now undergoing treatment at Mohammad Ali Hospital in Bogra town.

Locals said Amena often locked in altercation with her daughter-in-law Rumpa Begum, wife of Raihan, over trifling matters.

Following the feud, Rumpa filed a complaint with local UP member Abdul Latif Latim.

On November 30, the UP member arranged an arbitration at Amena's residence to settle the issue. As Amena protested the member's decision, Latim started beating her with bamboo sticks in presence of the villagers, leaving her seriously injured.

When asked, Latim admitted of the matter and said he could not control his anger when Amena declined to follow the decision of the village meeting.

Officer-in-Charge Shaheed Mahmud Khan of Gabtoli Model Police Station said he heard about the incident but none had lodged any complaint in this regard.
