Indian smuggler shot dead

An Indian smuggler was shot dead by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Hili border in Hakimpur upazila of the district yesterday.

The deceased is Biton Roy, 40, son of Bodyanath Roy of Hili Dakkhinpara under Dakhin Dinajpur of Pashchimbanga in India.

The incident took place at northern part of Hili railway station in the afternoon, said Abdul Mamun, camp commander of Hili Check Post of BGB-3 Battalion.

As soon as a freight train from Joypurhat arrived at the railway station at around 5:00pm, a gang started loading smuggled goods from Bangladesh territory.

Seeing this, a BGB patrol team tried to resist the smugglers but they attacked the border guards.

Finding no other way, the BGB men in self defence fired three bullets, leaving Biton dead on the spot.

However, other members of the gang managed to flee the scene, said the BGB official.

Three BGB members also sustained injured during the attack, he said.
