Illegal structures on Kuakata beach demolished

Patuakhali district administration yesterday demolished around 100 illegal structures on Kuakata sea beach in Kalapara upazila of the district.

The structures were built recently by a section of local influential people near the flood control embankment.

Led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Deepak Kumar Roy, also an executive magistrate, the drive started around 10:00am and continued until 4:00pm.

In September last year, the district administration dismantled over 100 illegal structures in the same area which were gradually built again.

On June 3, 2011, the High Court directed the authorities concerned to remove all structures from the beach area. The court also asked them to take necessary steps to stop encroachment, earth filling and construction of structures along the beach.

The HC directive came following a writ petition filed by a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
